In the summer of 2000, Microsoft announced its .NET platform and a new programming language called C#. The .NET platform is based on a Common Language Runtime similar to the Java Virtual Machine and on a set of libraries that can be used by a variety of languages that are able to inter-operate by compiling into an intermediate language called IL.
