A child’s mental wellbeing is as important as their physical wellbeing and childcare professionals have an important role in preventing and responding to child mental distress. The first of ten markers of good practice in Standard Nine of the
National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services
(DH/DfES, 2004a, p. 4) is that:
All staff working directly with children and young people have sufficient knowledge, training and support to promote the psychological well being of children, young people and their families and identify early indicators of difficulty.
