The head of my department used to say, “Good judgment comes from experience; experience comes from poor judgment.” If you make enough mistakes and you learn from them, you can become a good API designer. I believe that my many bad design decisions have been the biggest source of my current understanding. However, the learning curve is initially painful. It also takes a lot of time, and the knowledge gained isn’t easy to transfer.
