In Chapter 4 we started to think about what is expected of a university assignment. This chapter is designed to help you think about how you approach your written assignments. More than anything, you need to understand that, in two very important ways, writing is a process. Firstly, as we’ve already indicated, you don’t arrive at university knowing how to write an undergraduate essay, you learn these skills over time. Secondly, writing any assignment involves a process in itself; you don’t just sit down at your desk and begin writing your essay from scratch, beginning to end, in one go. This section aims to help you focus and so, perhaps, speed up this process, by going through some strategies to help you improve your writing, making sure you avoid some serious pitfalls, and thinking about how to tackle your largest writing project — the dissertation.
